A Toast To Creativity

To creativity!—It takes you out

   Of yourself, even as it drags you down

To what your inner self is all about,

   And humbles you as it gives you a crown.

Here’s to the work it takes to get it right!—

   Because the first draft’s always therapy.

If you want someone else to see the light

   That blinded you, then let them read Draft 3.

Here’s to the doubts you feel when it’s concluded!—

   And you sit there and think: “What is this worth?

No one will ever care.”  Wrong—dead wrong—you did.

   You cared.  You cared enough to give it birth.

      So here’s to you!—who dared to make the choice

      To lose yourself by finding your own voice.
